Designated a park in 1864 during the original platting of the city, Forest Park became famous for the Chautauqua Assemblies it held in the late 1800s until 1914. The park now offers swimming at the outdoor community pool, baseball fields, tennis courts, picnic shelters, play equipment and more. Each June this park is home to the Old West Cowboy Days Festival and each year in September, on consecutive weekends Forest Park hosts the Power of the Past Antique Engine & Tractor Show and the Ol Marais River Run Car Show the three largest events in Ottawa.

Smack dab in downtown Ottawa (5th and Main Streets), City Park spans two city blocks and makes for a great afternoon picnic or play spot for the youngsters. While there check out Dietrich Cabin, an 1857 cabin depicting life as it was in olden days or the Carnegie Cultural Center, originally the Carnegie Library built in 1903. Summer concerts are held in the gazebo at the south end of the park.

For several years now the bicyclers, hikers, runners, bird watchers and other nature lovers have enjoyed this gem in Eastern Kansas, this 50-mile converted railroad is the longest rail trail in Kansas. Spanning from Ottawa to Iola, bikers and walkers can view wildlife, native prairie, rolling hills and fertile farmland. The trailhead in Ottawa begins at the Old Depot Museum, a restored 1888 Santa Fe Depot.  The trail's hard-packed limestone surface is suitable for foot traffic, bicycles, and wheelchairs.  Portions of the trail inside city limits are paved asphalt adorned with ornamental lighting and landscaping.  For the safety of trail users, it is routinely patrolled by Kansa Dept. of Wildlife and Parks and local law enforcement.  The trail is open during daylight hours, and special permits may be obtained for group night rides or other events. 
Trail Permits: A per-person trail permit is required for persons 16 years and older to use the trail outside the city limits of Garnett and Ottawa. Persons using the trail within the city limits of Garnett and Ottawa may do so free of charge. The cities of Garnett and Ottawa maintain the trail with their respective city boundaries. This maintenance is provided in exchange for usage of the trail within those boundaries at no charge.
Self-pay daily permits are $3.50 per day and may be purchased at self-pay stations located at the Ottawa, Princeton, Richmond, Garnett and Welda trailheads.
Annual permits are available for $12.15 can also be purchased any one of the following ways:
  1.  
    At the self-pay stations by filling out the needed information and placing $12.15 in the self-pay envelope.
  2.  
    Purchase at any retail location where Kansas hunting, fishing and state park permits are sold.
  3. Purchase permits via the Kansas Department of Wildlife & Parks website at: www.wildlifelicense.com/ks
  4. Purchase by phone by calling 1-800-918-2877 (credit card required).

    No permit is required for persons 15 years of age or under.
 

Restrooms are spaced conveniently along the trail, and picnic areas are located at each trailhead. Camping is prohibited along the trail corridor, but North Lake Park in Garnett, which borders the trail, does allow camping. Equestrians are not permitted. Fishing is allowed only in lakes at Garnett. Hunting and all firearm possession is prohibited along the trail corridor.

Ottawa is the central point for three great fishing lakes located just outside Franklin County: Clinton Lake to the north, Pomona Lake to the west, and Hillsdale Lake to the east. Each is easily accessible and less than a 30-minute drive from Ottawa. All of the lakes were built as Army Corps of Engineers flood projects and contain ample opportunities for recreation. Each lake offers camping, boating access, swimming, wildlife viewing, fishing, and Pomona and Clinton both have adjacent hunting available. Fishing includes crappie, channel catfish, flathead, bass, bluegill,and everyone's favorite - walleye.

The Prairie Spirit Trail runs right next to this park, providing relaxing park scenery for participants. The park may be accessed off 11th Street, one block west from Main Street. This is a great walking park, with a paved trail around it, used by walkers, bikers and runners alike. There is plenty of shade, with benches for resting along the way. Adjacent to the parking lot, there is a work out section of the park, with about a dozen different stations for exercising. 

If Disc Golf is your game, you will enjoy the new 18-hole disc golf course recently established here.

This park is located at the corner of Main and 2nd Streets.  It is home to a gazebo like shelter and the mayor's Christmas Tree.  It serves as the focal point for many downtown events such as a summer concert series.

It provides youth and adult athletic leagues, operates the Don Woodward Community Center, and manages the popular outdoor swimming pool located in Forest Park. Heritage Park, located on the northeast side of town, is among the City's most recent additions. It lies along Powhattan Street near Birch Street on land acquired by the City during the 1990s, and developed as a neighborhood park. This park boasts a walking track approximately 1/2-mile in length and a playground structure suitable for toddler to ten-year old children.

Cox Field is a recreational complex which is home to the baseball programs sponsored by the Ottawa Recreation Commission. There are a total of 9 fields; 3 full size fields, 2 softball fields, 2 coach pitch fields, and 2 tee ball fields. The park includes two restroom facilities.

Freedom Park is a newly-named small neighborhood park on Poplar Street between 2nd and 3rd Streets. Nearby are the Don Woodward Community Center and a Skateboard Park which was constructed on a pair of under-used tennis courts.
